It is interesting to me that now seems the time to share my thoughts on a few aspects of Chasidism, and that you’re the ones to share this with. There are a couple of guidelines to lay out so that you’ll understand why I will skew things a certain way:
1. I came to this (was sent to this?) directly from 3 years of participating in sweat lodge ceremonies.
2. I have been me a lot longer than I’ve been this. I never intended to replace myself, only to enhance.
There are 4 spiritual Worlds, 10 Attributes, and 3 Garments.
A. The 4 spiritual Worlds are, in descending order:
Emanation (closest to G-d)
At the bottom of Action is our Physical Action. Our efforts and intent (based on our individual abilities) in learning Torah, performing Commandments, and Prayer, give us the power to elevate these to higher worlds.
B. The 10 Attributes, also spiritual, are set in 2 “groupings” (I wish I could think of a better word.): Intellect and Emotions.
The Intellectual Attributes are:
Wisdom (considered masculine)
Understanding (considered feminine)
Knowledge (their “offspring”)
The Emotions (sometimes called “character traits”) are:
Severity (sometimes described as “strength” or “might”)
Mercy (sometimes called “Beauty”)
Splendor (sometimes called “Humility”)
Yes, I know there are only 9 there. The 10th is:
Each of these 10 has these 10 within it (and above and below it) infinitely, and Sovereignty serves as the link between each 10. Also, each of these 10 has a physical counterpart.
So, here’s the story:
4-leggeds and other creatures live with their heads in line with their heart, so their emotions rule their intellect. But us 2-leggeds are created with our heads above our hearts, so our intellects (should) rule naturally over our emotions.
The object of the game is to act/behave/respond to every situation with an even-keeled outlook because everything that happens in the world, right down to your itchy knee, is by Providence. The bad that one receives is to be accepted in the same way as the good because the bad is really hidden good. I’ve been at this just about 18 years and it’s still not easy. This is where the Garments come in:
C. The Garments, how we express our emotions (and intellect), are:
The Garments are what we have to define and improve our character traits, how we relate to others, relate to situations.
I would give you more but this may be enough to get a picture. If you have any questions, I’ll see what I can do for you.
